We thought it was over. We thought the gods had eradicated this pestilence from the world, but they hadn’t. When the Prophets left that forsaken land, they must have been too late. Our forefathers had escaped the Cataclysm, but its taint had clung to them as they sailed away from the mainland. It twisted the minds of the weakest among them, infected their bodies, and found a foothold in Pavon, while remaining unseen by deity and mortal alike... until now. It began in the South. The people of Ignecium- followers of the death goddess, Avidta, thought it a plague. At first they saw it as a blessing, meant to cleanse their nation of those with weak minds and feeble constitutions. However, it soon began to spread like wildfire, killing indiscriminately. They tried to stop it by culling the infected, but their mass graves only gave the taint a passage into the land itself. Grass gave way to tendrils of mycelium, choking out crops and propagating its toxic spores. For the first time since the old world had been shattered, Avidta’s people knew true fear. They fled to the North, but the taint followed. It engulfed the Sylvian woodlands, forcing the evacuation of all but Essani’s highest order of druids, who were left to fight back the taint, trying to protect the ancient oaks of their glorious forest. The Gilboans came down from their frigid mountains to join the refugees. With the aid of Gilboan clerics, the local Avasonus and refugee druids managed to preserve Aquitus as the final bastion between the mortal races and extinction. Their combined power may be able to drive back the mycelium, but hope is dwindling. As foolish as some may think it is to place every ounce of one’s faith in the often fickle gods, I fear that a miracle may just be our last chance for survival...
